Mail access to my second disk is excruciatingly slow. Description and
hand-wringing below. Any suggestions for other information to collect, or
solutions? adTHANKSvance.

Dual boot, Windows2K on the entire "first" disk, FreeBSD 4.8 on the entire
"second" disk. Both IDE disks are on the first controller; the second
controller has the CD and zip disk.
This is a personal workstation (Dell XPS R450), I don't serve anything
outside my 2-workstation lan. I run imap-uw to access my stored email, so
that I can change mail clients at will (I'm fickle), access my mail store
whether W2K or *nix is running, and easily access stored mail from either
machine on my lan.
I keep my stored email on my W2K FAT partition on the first disk, so that
I can access it from FreeBSD (and from Linux when I used that).
Ob-irritating-newbie-statement: this works fine on W2K (using cygwin's
imap-uw), and did work fine running Redhat 7.X through 8.X on the second
disk.

Using imap-uw and either Mozilla 1.3 mail or pine, from freebsd, with the
mail store configured to be on the other, "first" drive, I can list my
*folders* fairly quickly, but opening a folder to list the messages takes
minutes.
I also configured pine to read the folders directly, rather than go
through imap, and this is also slow (and not what I expected).
However, I can cat or vim any message file stored on the w2k disk quick as
a bunny.
I copied the entire set of mail folders from the w2k disk over to the
freebsd disk, and configured mozilla to get at them through imap. That
also works quick as a bunny.
Summary:
- accessing mail on the freebsd disk through imap is acceptably quick
- accessing mail on the w2k disk from bsd is unacceptably slow, whether
through imap or "directly" as described above for pine
- just accessing the mail files on the w2k disk as normal files, catting
and editing, is acceptably quick.
