After a huge amount of going backwards, and forwards, and backwards again - and getting to the point of almost throwing the unit out of the proverbial window - this now appears to be working. Using HP SmartRAID 6i firmware v2.68a, with the MSA running firmware 1.52A - our HP DL380 and MSA20 now appear to work ok. This is the first combination of firmware versions that has offered any semblance of reliability. The units can now pass all the drive tests done to it (concentrating on failing / replacing drives). We can now fail multiple drives in the DL380 - and drives in the MSA20, and the system will rebuild them flawlessly one at a time when they're replaced (even while under I/O load). The previous SmartRAID 6i firmware (2.58) coupled with the 'latest' msa20 firmware (1.52A) failed randomly (just as every other previous one did). So, fingers crossed... Just thought I'd send this in, to in hopes of having someone else avoid the hell we've just been through. -Karl
