It's pretty straightforward to upgrade if you start with 4.5, provided you
have a decent internet connection and you aren't afraid of using the make
command.
Check the release notes (/usr/src/UPDATING) and see if there are any major
features that you care about since 4.5-RELEASE. I'd say that hot-swappable
ATA is the bigee at least for me, but that probably does nothing for 90%+ of
FreeBSD users.
(And I have that right-now today even though it's a "4.6" feature because I
upgraded my 4.5-stable as soon as--actually *before*--it was merged into the
stable track.)
