Use an IP address first (the one for a machine at your local ISP will suffice). If that works, then the link is good. Then try the same machine as the ip address, but use it's name. If that fails, it's probably because you have configured a name server in /etc/resolv.conf. Unix systems measure "uptime" in years, Winblows measures it in minutes.
