Just for the note: I've switched to multiple-vdev root pool
configuration on a real machine and it works well.

	NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
	hades ONLINE 0 0 0
	  mirror-0 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada0p3 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada1p3 ONLINE 0 0 0
	  mirror-1 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada2p3 ONLINE 0 0 0
	    ada3p3 ONLINE 0 0 0

root has 1 copies and I've tried to copy it over, so it's likely
located on the second mirror, still the system is bootable and I
haven't seen any problems at all.

The questions still remain, as this configuration is not really
documented.
