This has two 80G disks connected to an onboard RAID controller which, according to the documentation, is the Intel 300ESB I/O Controller Hub. If, in the BIOS, I map PATA and SATA to Legacy ATA, both 4.10 and 5.2.1 CDs boot and install fine. Obviously though that's downgrading my shiny new SATA disks. If I map PATA to Legacy ATA and enable SATA, then 5.2.1 boots and installs fine, but 4.10 hangs after kernel configuration, tail of log is: isa_probe_children: probing PnP devices BIOS Geometries: 0:03fefe3f 0..1022=1023 cylinders, 0..254=255 heads, 1..63=63 sectors 1:03fefe3f 0..1022=1023 cylinders, 0..254=255 heads, 1..63=63 sectors 0 accounted for Device configuration finished. bpf: lo0 attached bpf: sl0 attached Full output is attached as 4.10-PATA+SATA.log Finally, if I enable SATA RAID and map PATA to Legacy ATA, both 4.10 and 5.2.1 boot from the CD, but neither recognises the RAID array; when I try to install, sysinstall tells me "No disks found!" and suggests my disk controller is not being properly probed. This happens whether I set up RAID-0, RAID-1, or no RAID array at all. I've tried pre-loading various modules in the hope that they would recognise the array, but to no avail. I'd seen Doug Ambrisko's patch from March which led me to believe that this controller was supported, but a quick look at the sources on other machines suggests that it wasn't committed. What's the best way forward for me? Ideal situation would be to get the RAID controller working on 4.10, but I'm not seeing any success with SATA at all so I'm guessing my best chance would be on 5.2.1. I would rather get the hardware working than go down the vinum route. This server doesn't have to be in action for a week or two, so I can forget about vinum until then. Here's the full output from the 5.2.1.
