Your Xserver starts up in 8-bit mode. In the Display section of your
/etc/XF86Config file, you can specify the default color depth at
startup. See 'man X'. Be aware that unless your graphics card has more
than 4MB, you will probably only get 640x480x24bits as your maximum
possible.
