another sysadmin has just installed postgresql 7.2 on our 4.4 box.

I am trying to start it by:

#su pgsql
$ /usr/local/etc/rc.d/010.pgsql.sh start
ldconfig: mkstemp(/var/run/ld-elf.so.hints.xRrSxZ): Permission denied
Password:
Sorry
$

This however works:

postmaster -D /usr/local/pgsql/data

permissions for /usr/local/pgsql/data:
1 drwx------  6 pgsql  wheel   512 Feb 27 22:18 data

Any ideas what I need to check to find out why this is happening?

Many thanks in advance for any help
