Thank you! dovecot supports maildir and mbox, has active development, a very responsive author, is available from ports, and quite easy to install (i'm happily running it for > 6 months on 2 FreeBSD 5.4-REL mailservers) /usr/ports/mail/dovecot/ http://www.dovecot.org/
