I'd pointed that out too (please read the second para in my mail; quoted
here for convenience):

"I'm not sure of this but I think pkg_add -f should just install new
packages and not remove the older versions. Please check this before
trying."

Actually, the man page is quite useful: pkg_add -n could be used to
check if the old versions of libraries will be removed or not.
