I've upgraded to 4.5-prerelease and removed USB support from the kernel. Didn't want to re-enable until I knew what to do, and in search of the proper kernel config lines I ran across Nick's USB/BSD web page. I interpreted that (possibly incorrectly) as saying FBSD didn't presently support USB joysticks. So it's off to look at the PR and another thank-you.
