Since my system hasn't been up too long, I can't say if this also affects the other issues you are mentioning. However, it _may_ be best to compile the kernel with ath compiled in rather than using a loadable module, and it may solve some problems if you update your source and recompile the kernel. Since you're on STABLE, I don't know if changes has made it to the latest stable.
