Robert,
I went to the site you mention, and looked at the drives.

The STD12000N seems similar to what I've used. The backup software we
were using did its own compression. The STD14000N-SB is similar to what
the UNIX guys used.

I feel comfortable with the 4mil 90m uncompressed 2GB drives, but
please get several second opinions. I haven't used tape backup with
FreeBSD all that much, and I don't want my inexperience to cause you
trouble.

The model with hardware compression is nice in some circumstances too.
The UNIX heads at work like the hardware compression. Perhaps someone on
the list can address hardware compression as well.

	Thanks, [RC]

Oh, before I forget, if used for a full-tape nightly backup, I've not
seen one of the HP 4mils live for more than three years. I personally
wouldn't expect much more out of the Seagates. (There is only one 4mil
drive maker in the world anyway. <GRIN>) But in my work environment,
replacing a 500$ tape drive every three years was not a concern. If you
don't run a full tape every night, I would expect that you'd get a
proportionally longer life out of the tapedrive.

When we reached the point that we had two dozen (4mil) tapedrives in
the field, periodic failures began to be annoying. We eventually
switched to DLT in the hopes that a simpler tapepath, and a larger tape
format would translate into less wear and tear failure. (Equally
important were the faster data to tape speed and the larger capacity. At
one point we had three 4mil drives for one weekly backup alone.)
(Please, no abuse from exabyte lovers, they didn't have anything
comprable to DLT WHEN we made our decision to go DLT.)
