If there is indeed a tape inserted, build a CAMDEBUG kernel, boot it, and do camcontrol debug -Ic b:t:l (b = bus, t = target, l = lun) and then do the 'mt status' dance as above and send to scsi@freebsd.org (the appropriate list- not hackers).
