	There was a manufacturing flaw in most (if not all) NEC 3xe
	drives that were manufactured in early 1994.  This drive just
	doesn't not work whether it be DOS, FreeBSD, or any other
	operating system..  If you have such a drive the only solution
	is to replace it.  I've never seen the exact error message
	you're talking about, but then I've only seen the error from
	Linux and DOS, so it is going to be different.  We had a drive
	here that was manufactured as late as April 1994 that didn't work.
	I'm not sure when the cut off is when this was fixed in the
	assembly line, but I would check the manufacturer date on it
	first.  If it's not early 1994 model, then I'm not sure what the
	problem is.
