I simply swapped the SiI0680 controller card for this one, and now my FreeBSD system is performing beautifully. All of my drives are recognized, configured properly, and (at least with minimal testing) appear to be working just fine. Perhaps this revelation will help to shed some light on what the culprit could be ... let's hope so.
