Frequently you'ld want to set other defaults as well, not just the default SSL library to build against. If the SSL default is all you care about then your existing setting is fine. This is just setting some Makefile variables -- see the section 'VARIABLE ASSIGNMENTS' in make(1) for details on all of the different assignment operators.
