I hardly would consider the gigabit eth driver most intel chips the most widely used. rl, ed, fxp by far seem to be the majority of the share I have observed. In fact, I didn't even know the em driver till you mentioned it. Being a network admin and dealing with many and various machines, I see quite a few nics. And as long as the cards work under project-evil which I have heard a feeling they (correct me if I am wrong please so I can update my own list of known to work hardware), seems fair enough to go to release.
