I thought that / had to be within the 500MB limit (that is, the whole / parition has to allocated on the first HDD within the 500MB region). From the docs it looks like you can have the / somewhere up in the 2GB region (the docs give examples of a 4 Gig HDD, where the second half of the drive has FreeBSD on it). I have not found a reference (yet) as to how far down the disc the / partition can be.
