(In hindsight, I can't believe I put up with that behavior for all this time; I figured it had to be a bug.) The man page is clearly misleading on this issue: if str NULL name of text filter which does accounting of str NULL name of output filtering program What I wanted to do has nothing to do with accounting. And from their names ("input filter" and "output filter") either sounds appropriate. Thanks a bunch!
