I can't speak for detecting the LLVM version in base, but ports requiring
devel/llvm* in some fashion often times need items that base has removed.
Example: llvm-config is one program in the LLVM ports but not in base, need=
ed
by www/firefox and mail/thunderbird as their configure scripts explicitly c=
heck
for its presence and executes it to find the LLVM port's clang binaries.

You may be able to save some build time somewhat by disabling every option =
in
the LLVM port, but keep in mind some dependent ports may need some of those
options.
