I can't provide detailed instructions for that, though. Thanks for the kind reply. I had a troll around the XFree86 site and came across the repository of the (continuously) updated drivers, and did a simply checkout for that module. That appears to have sorted my problem out, so much so that I have gone through the steps in the Handbook, and can at least now run "startx" successfully now :-) I've a strange mouse pointer in X-Windows (kinda like one pointer with two "shadows" alongside", but this is much better than a coredump.
