The problem which immediately sprang to mind was chown (it had/has a user.group syntax) but according to the 4.0-S manpage: COMPATIBILITY Previous versions of the chown utility used the dot (``.'') character to distinguish the group name. This has been changed to be a colon (``:'') character so that user and group names may contain the dot character. ...which I take it is a 'yes' in theory. Adduser doesn't appear to like it; you may find that pw(8) is more tolerant. -- jan grant, ILRT, University of Bristol. http://www.ilrt.bris.ac.uk/ Tel +44(0)117 9287163 Fax +44 (0)117 9287112 RFC822 jan.grant@bris.ac.uk Strive to live every day as though it was last Wednesday.
