Thanks Jens, that's right on the spot. The server chokes on the default
resolution selected. (I autoconfigured the server and didn't think
about setting a reasonable Modes line).

It seems to work more or less up to at least 1400x1050.
('more or less' as certain settings show various visual artifacts,
1280x1024 is particularly bad for instance).
