Generally you can have up to 4, but a guy at some company that I can't remember the name of patched FreeBSD to work with their 8-way systems. That company subsequently went out of business, so don't worry about 8-way systems for now. If you want SCSI, I'd say go with high end Adaptec controllers, like the 3950U2 or 2940U2W. If you want Fibre Channel, the best thing to get is a QLogic board.
