This may not actually be new-malloc() related.  I currently see:

 PID USERNAME     THR PRI NICE   SIZE    RES STATE  C   TIME   WCPU COMMAND

1320 fullermd       5  20   10   253M   197M kserel 0 166:04  0.00% firefox-bi

which are certainly larger than I recall them generally being.  And
this is a Jan 7 -CURRENT, before the malloc changes, still on Xorg
6.8.2.
