Raisin Eyebrows: Is Dried Fruit Good for Your Teeth? Do you remember how disappointed you were as a kid when some concerned = adult dared put raisins in your Halloween bucket? Your mother was proba= bly relieved, convinced they would be far better for you and your pearl= y whites than the rest of the junk food you=92d strung out across the l= iving room floor=2E Ask a pediatric dentist, however, and you might get= a different story=2E It=92s true that there are a number of benefits to eating raisins=2E Th= ey=92re low in fat and cholesterol, and boast plenty of fiber, calcium = and potassium=2E Unfortunately, they=92re also both sticky and high in = sugar, putting them high on the list of foods that can cause cavities=2E= Some health professionals lump them in with all the other typical junk= foods kids eat=2E Don=92t worry, raisins aren=92t the only foods once = thought healthy that can contribute to tooth decay=2E Go ahead and add = other dried fruit, sweetened cereals and even fruit juices to the list=2E Don=92t chuck raisins out just yet, however=2E Raisins were recently fo= und to contain phytochemicals, which are known to inhibit the growth of= bacteria commonly linked to cavities=2E Note that this study was condu= cted in a lab, and no study has even been done to show that cavities ar= e either more or less likely to find kids that eat raisins=2E So, where does this leave you? A good general rule when it comes to eat= ing for good health (oral and otherwise) is to stick with whole fruits = and vegetables whenever possible=2E If you must eat something that you = aren=92t sure is good for you, do it in moderation=2E Be sure to drink = lots of water, and always either brush your teeth or rinse your mouth o= ut with warm water after eating sugary or acidic foods to prevent tooth= decay! If you have any questions about preserving your smile, please don't hes= itate to call us at (818)785-8388 or email us at drz@dentistsherwood=2E= com today=2E Best Regards, Dr=2E Julian H=2E Zhitnitsky P=2ES=2E If you have any friends or family members who you feel could u= se our services, please don't hesitate to have them call us=2E We'll be= sure to take good care of them=2E
