Hmm..having a "version number" variable would be very useful as a precursor to an automatic 'make upgrade' target which could rebuild ports and dependencies as needed (you'd also need a PORTS_VERSION variable for when ports are patched/changed). In the current place in the comments it's useless and probably always has been, but maybe instead of just removing it we should move it to a VERSION variable in the makefile body.
