Thanks! For the archives, I also discovered that the issue can be worked around by physically timing the insertion of the stick. If you insert it just enough that it gets powered up (presumably initializing) but not enough for it to attach to the USB bus, wait a few seconds, and insert it all the way - it will get properly detected.
