I've had a problem using the bce driver on an IBM HS21 blade, using a Nortel L3-7 switch. This problem was documented quite a while ago according to http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=118238. I took the patch provided in there, and applied it to FreeBSD 7.1 and it worked great. I maxed out a 100Mbps LAN connection...so no bandwidth hit either. I know 8.0 is in the RC phase...is there any chance that this simple patch can be put into 8.0? If you have any questions on what I did or more details on my setup, please don't hesitate to ask!
