You probably want the book ``The Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System'' by McKusick et al. It covers FreeBSD's predecessor, but most of the higher-level ideas are still relevant. (Word has it that Kirk McKusick is working on a new book specifically about FreeBSD.)
