I'm not sure why you'd want to go into single user mode to change the
root password, but anyway:

It gets you to the boot loader prompt. There, enter "boot -s" to boot
up with your default kernel and into single user mode.

You can also drop into single user mode by issuing "kill -TERM 1" (as
root, of course) when in multi user mode.
