it's been a while since you asked, but since I am reading through old
mail today to find something I want, and I know the answer...

Vim has `noincsearch' set by default.  Try setting `incsearch' and
play around with /text.  It works on vim 5.x that I have, so it's been
a while that this has been with us :)
