I'm seeing the same problem after installing the latest xorg and gnome3 on
a server.

It's also been reported to the Ubuntu buglist, so it's not just a FreeBSD
problem.  There is a thread suggesting that it is caused by too many open
files, but since this occurs on a quad dual core Opteron with 16 GB after
a reboot this seems unlikely to me.
