That doesn't even mention the PKG_DBDIR of "/usr/ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk" which would seem to need to be changed if a user is going to install an application like ports(7) claims is possible in the first line. And sure, there are slew of variables to try changing, but I'd like to read about someone else's experiences with it before wasting time doing my own experiments, risking a royal mess of my ports setup. Documentation's never good enough to get things right without some trial and error. That's why people write such articles, no? So then, if I set up a who new environment for bsd.port.mk, what happens to all the "pkg" tools and "portsupgrade"? Do they know about those variables? Can the tools be used? Do they then forget about the root-installed packages? Etc. But thanks for the hint; I should have mentioned what I knew already.
