 Well, I'd be willing to bet it's DES on your old 2.2.8.

 4.x uses MD4.... you can tell by looking at the master.passwd file.

 I tar'd up my  /usr/home directory. moved the tar to the new machine,
un-tar'd.

 Also copied over my /etc/group file.

 Voila.
