I filed a bug report http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=156330 which was ofc closed because I should update the ports tree (mine is from November 2010); I will do this later in another VM. To overcome the current problem I have just copied over the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf from another VM where it was generated using the VMware's driver in 8.x; it works just fine there in 9-CURRENT with the x11-drivers/xf86-video-vmware driver in high res 1920x1200 and cut&paste between the VM's and Win apps.
