Howdy, > How do I run X windows? When I tried "/usr/X11R6" I got "Permission denied." > Pwd shows "/root". Also, please suggest a small program or two to test > within X windows. You need to either use startx or have xdm start on boot to get X running. Trying to get the server to run by typing "X" will not work. :-) Try looking in the FAQ - there's a whole section (chapter 9) that details how to get X running on your machine. If you installed the docs, the FAQ is in /usr/share/doc/FAQ. You can also access it at: http://www.freebsd.org/FAQ/FAQ.html > Is there a generic structure to these ports (once compiled) and what is > the general method of running them? I assume you mean X here. The FAQ will detail how to get X set up and running.
