This occurs whether I use the drive geometry as supplied by segate during install (FreeBSD Install complains that the geometry is wrong), or during the install when a small DOS partition is used to force FreeBSD's idea of drive geometry. Often, machine will complain of other "out of swap space" or VM errors after several boot attempts.
