I revisited the first machine, deinstalled items, repeated the patching and installation routine (much the same as, maybe not identical to, the first attempt), Shutter worked. I'm glad that it works now :-) but I don't know why the first attempt didn't have the required effect. Would it matter that in the first attempt, I ran 'make install' (not 'make install clean') for gnome-vfs?
