Marc, I noticed you tried the BREAK_TO_DEBUGGER and whatnot already, perhaps letting us know what hardware you have in your smp box might help some, I'm running SMP and doing buildworlds and kernel compiles without a problem. I'm not however, running X nor doing any desktop work on it.
