I have no experience with auto mounting (amd) but there has been a recent discussion in "questions". I do a similar thing to what you want but I just mount the file system containing the home directories when the client machines boot. I serve all of the major binaries over the LAN as well since some of the clients (old 386s) seem to run faster. (the squirrels don't need to run as much to turn the disks. ;-) ) Quota should also be able to run OK, but sorry again I don't run it.
