I don't know if you found me asking about it or saying it worked, but
it works. In fact, right now I'm using a -stable system to compile the
-current system on that box, as the installed -current is to badly
broken to build.

Well, if both systems meet the criteria for booting, you can boot them
both. And cross-mount them. I even set up the second one to use the
swap of the first one.

I'm pretty sure I did it that way at least once. You can also install
from sources on the running system after you've mounted the file
systems for the second one.
