I would suggest, if at all possible, to first download and burn an install CD with 6.2 and then cvsup (csup) that to the latest world and ports, build and install world and kernel and then try again. It is possible that the version of X you are getting is out of sync with the OS you are using. That is only one possibility among others, but is one of the easiest to eliminate by bringing everything up to date.
