I think this is a bad call.  Making GEOM default is reasonable, but
removing the old code this quickly is begging for problems.  I know
that you have little desire to keep it, but there is some level of
compatibility that you need to keep for at least a while.  In the
fullness of time, I can see this being reasonable, but I think that
this is too destabilizing this close to a release, and leaves us with
no fallback position should unforseen issues with GEOM arise.
