The tutorial assumes that you are using ppp(8), aka user-ppp. It uses the tun0 interface. On the other hand, pppd(8) uses the ppp0 interface (that's why the tun0 interface is not found). If you are going to use pppd(8), edit the necessary scripts and change "tun0" for "ppp0".
