Hi Peter,

I think you're looking in the wrong place to see what's going on;
The error message means it can't start the x server. Try looking
at XFree86.0.log in your /usr/X11R6 somewhere or /var/log/.

That will give you a _very_ detailed description on what's going
on when you type startx.

If that doesn'y bring a solution right away, please include the output
of that log file and your config file next time so we can take a look.
