You could create a memory disk with mdconfig(8) and mount it, e.g.: mdconfig -u md1 release.img mount /dev/md1s2a /mnt Path to file: /mnt/usr/freebsd-dist/base.txz After done with the file: umount /mnt mdconfig -du md1
