That was it!  You solved it.  I'm not sure how/what you can do for 
others that run into this but there was nothing that gave me any clues 
from searching how to get these ports to install right.  I don't know 
when the docbook defaults changed but I've had this platform running for 
years and it got to those options without me making any changes from the 
defaults when they were installed.

One last unrelated question, I have the following port installed and 
it's marked IGNORE.  Is this a necessary port or can I manually delete it?

xf86-input-fpit-1.3.0_2 <   needs updating (port has 1.3.0_3)
