I've tried swapping the two modems, and I've also tried dialing into the
FreeBSD machine from a 3rd outside modem, with the same results.  And
yeah, I do have the same problem in terminal mode.  Well, almost the same
-- the modems don't hang up until I disconnect, but they just see garbage
from each other.
